Why my 2004 jag xj8 engine lite keeps coming on with PO 171 reading

The mechanic disconnected all the sensors, replace air filter 2 times within 3 months, installed theromastat, replaced servatine belt.  He reconnected the sensors, redid belt because belt separated and shreded one thread.
