Also i would like to know how to get
the np-231d transmission to shift
with the original 96 dodge range
selector, i don't know if i have to use
the long shift linkage with short plate
(that bolts to transfercase) or the
short linkage with long plate ext.

I would use the ATF MD-3 and Dextron III and get another bottle of Dex III. The ATF+4 is synthetic and while you can use it, I personally wouldn't.

It's compatible, so if it was just a quart, you might be fine. Hard to say. I don't like mixing fluid myself, but that's me. If your paranoid about it, drain the fluid and re-add some new.

On the bottle that i filled the tranny with says Super s multi-purpose atf+4

Actually that helped me out a lot thank you verry much and I'm gonna drive it for a few more miles to see what happens. would you know if the long or short linkage for the transfer case? Its the np-231d i also would you have any idea why the transmission would have a steady tick? It ticked before i mixed the fluid.
