I have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 that will drive
fine then all at oncr will quit shifting and the
fluid is black

Sounds like a valve body issue, but burn fluid is usually a sign of over circulation. Don't rule out a torque converter with a rounded neck either. I would just put a Remanufactured Transmission and Torque Converter and be done. Most of them come with 3 year warranties anyway.
