what can cause my truck not to start

driving down the road alternator caught fire was put out quickly it cranks over
but will not start

Could be a bad battery.

Check for damaged wiring around the area of the alternator fire. Check all fuses. Something caused your alternator fire and the crank, but no start condition is probably related somehow to the fire.
