"Check gauge" light is on
Howdy, I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500. Today
while driving the "check gauge" light came on and
at the same time my battery needle flew full to the
right. After about 5 miles the light went off and
battery needle went back to normal. I checked
battery cables and connections, as far as I can see
all looks good. Ant ideas or helpful hints are
seriously welcome. Thanks all !!!
The check gauges light came on to alert you that something was going on that needed your immediate attention. In this case the battery was being overcharged. Since it went back to normal I'd just keep an eye on it. But your alternator may be starting to malfunction. Sounds like maybe the voltage regulator (usually inside the alternator) may be getting ready to quit. If it happens again I'd have the alternator checked. If it continues for more than a few moments pull over and shut down the truck. A battery that's being seriously overcharged can explode!! HTH. -Jim
Thank you for responding, thay was my fear, for it to blow, I have been having alot of hard start problems, sometimes when I turn it over it shuts down like the battery died and then starts up. Radio stations have to be reprogrammed etc. Crap, looks like more money into this old truck. Thank you again !!!!

Jesse, you're welcome. Glad to help. With the additional information check those battery cable connections again as well as the connections at the alternator. If you have a bad connection especially on the positive (+) side this will take the battery out of the charging system circuit. This will cause the alternator to go to full, uncontrolled, power! This is a very good possibility for the voltage spike. An intermittent bad connection. HTH. -Jim
Jim, Thanks again, you have been very helpful, looks like the alternator, take good care.I'll let you know the out come....ug!!÷!
You're welcome. Glad to help. Yes, please let us know. -Jim
Hi jim, well I checked everything, nothing looked loose or frayed, I wiggled some wires and tightened the battery cables, so far so good, gauge light has not come on again. Could it be the weather? It has reached freezing Temps when all this started. Really trying to avoid the mechanic.
Hi Jesse, yes, the weather can play a part in electrical troubles. I'm glad haven't had the problem since you checked and tightened everything. Most likely it was an intermittent bad connection. Thank you for the best answer click! -Jim
