91 Buick Riviera. transmission slipped, check engine light went on and speedometer quit working.
The tranny slipped, check engine light went on, and speedometer quit working. Car will shift if I start in low gear and manually shift it.
Try this: Roll down a window, disconnect the battery negative cable, turn on the headlight switch, wait at least 30 seconds, turn off headlight switch, reconnect battery and roadtest to see if systems came back. If they did great, if not then you will have to have the transmission and ECM checked. You may have a transmission problem just starting, get the slipping checked before it leaves you walking.
transmission clutch pack is worn. vehicle speed sensor (vss) should be replaced. seems about right for the car's age.
I would have to agree with Jason. The input speed sensor needs replacing. This malfunction will cause a number of warning lights to illuminate. Another cause could be the transmission shift solenoids have worn, causing the transmission to go in limp mode . Do not add more transmission fluid, this is a common mistake people make when transmission problems occur.
Whereas I had to replace transmissions in two of my Rivieras... a third one with the problems of slippery,CEL and speed odometer needle moving all over the place was solved by changing the ECM. I agree with Tennisshoes have them checked>>>SEMPER FI Good luck.
