The Check Engine Light on my 92 Buick Park Ave comes on intermittently. It almost Always happens in city driving. Sometimes when I start it cold it feels like it needs a tuneup but that happens rarely, a handful of times in the past 2 years. The mechanic said the warning is that my camshaft is out of position and the coolant is hot. But, he says, the coolant isn't hot. It has 81k miles and it usually runs like a top.

Use a paperclip to pull the trouble codes out of the computer. With the ignition off put the paperclip in the top two right corner cavities of the ALDL connector under the dash, see the picture. Now turn the ignition to the run position but don't start the engine! The check engine light will begin flashing. First you will get a code 12 to let you know you're in diagnostics mode. You'll see flash, pause, flash, flash. Each code will flash three times. After the code 12 flashes three times any stored trouble codes will begin flashing out, three times each. For example a code 32 would be flash, flash, flash, pause, flash, flash. After the third time there will be a longer pause then the next code will begin flashing out. Once all the stored codes have been flashed out the code 12 will begin flashing again. Once you have the trouble codes post them here and we can help further. Hope that helps! Jim
