I have the exact problem with my 1989 Buick Riveria, I gave some one a jump start about a week before my battery lost all power. I installed a new battery and the same problem exist, battery light still come on in dash board. Why is this happening?

It is happening because you blew the one way diode in the alternator when the other vehicle started. There is a safe-ish procedure for boosting a car, as follows: Turn on the headlamps, or some other high draw item on the 'dead' car. Keep the boosting car running, and connect the positive to the positive, then the negative of the running car to a ground on the dead car. Do not, unless you have no choice, use the battery, as the spark can cause the hydrogen to explode. Leave the booster car running. Turn off the draw on the dead car, let the batter charge for about 5 minutes. Turn off the booster car, then start the 'dead' car. Disconnect the cables asap, and start the booster to recharge the battery. You should always try to use a booster pack instead of another car, it at all possible, to prevent a lot of electrical issues.
