I have a 97 Ford F 150. 4 wheel drive keeps coming on as I'm driving down the road

If it is an electronic unit then check the switches, the 4X4 switch could have an internal intermittent contact that the GEM is reading as an engage signal. Also check the harness where it comes through the floor to the transfer case motor, have seen a few of those chaf and then cross circuit. HTH
