I have a 2000 Ford F150 4.2lL V6. The service engine light came on and at the garage
they said there was a problem with bank 1 and bank 2. What does that mean? What is a
Bank one refers to the side of the engine where the #1 cylinder is and bank 2 refers to the side of the engine where cylinder #2 is. A smoke test is used to find tiny leaks in the EVAP system. The EVAP system pulls gasoline fumes from the gas tank to the engine to be burned up while you're driving instead of the fumes being released to the outside air. HTH. -Jim
Harmless smoke is forced into the gas tank with a machine. Then the mechanic looks for any smoke coming out of the EVAP system lines that run from the gas tank to the engine. HTH. -Jim
Bank 1 and 2 problems are sometimes vacuum leaks. They may want to run a smoke test to find a vacuum leak. This leak could be at the intake manifold.
