how can an engine turn over without the key in ignition
just restored a 66 landau. had trouble cranking at first from a bad solenoid and poor negative cable ground. Now engine cranks and doesn't stop even if key is out of ignition. Only stops if battery is disconnected. What is wrong. Bad ignition switch?
Stuck starter solenoid, usually caused by low voltage, but have seen then fail right out of the box.
this is the second solenoid that has gone bad trying to start the car. what else is wrong? is something else shorted out?
Like I stated low voltage is the killer, so make sure the cables and the battery is good and the solenoid is grounded properly, you may have to sand the contact areas where the solenoid is bolted down.
ok will try that. The battery and cables are new and in good condition but area it is bolted is pretty rusted. May be contributing.
If it is too bad you may want to relocate the solenoid or run a separate ground wire to it.
