1964 Thunderbird with stock 390 engine & transmission. At times to start you have to slightly lift up on gear shift lever. any help as to the problem

At times in order to start 1964 Thunderbird with stock engine & transmission you have to slightly lift up gear shift lever. Any help as to problem & correction.

A just neutral safety switch at bottom of column & May be replace bushings in shots linkage.
