How do I fix the fuel and temp guages on my 1963 Thunderbird.

Asked by jnw1961 Aug 25, 2012 at 11:13 PM about the 1963 Ford Thunderbird

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Both guages come on and then drop to Zero.  Per the manual I tested both guages and they both were operational.   Next I replaced the constant voltage regulator.  Both guages went to full right.  Next I removed the        radio suppression choke on the back of the voltage regulator.  The gas guage seemed to work but the temp guage remained pegged.  I'm out of ideas.

Check your grounds. Often dash gauges give false readings when there is a poor ground. The sequence is, power through the switch, to the gauge. Other side of the gauge to the sender. No pressure, sender "open", gauge reads low. High pressure, sender "closed", gauge reads high...
