Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Don't want to start and stay running. Only way it stays running is if you hold the gas to the floor. And even then it spits and sputters and shakes. What could it be? Tried holding the butterfly shut, that don't help. Poured gas directly into the carb, that don't help either. Any sort of knowledge on this would be nice. THANKS!

You could also check the fuel pump as well.

So basically it could be anything? Lol.

First off try the easy shit, replace the plugs and wires. If that doesn't work, replace the cap and rotor. Then check your timing. Try that and we'll go from there.

start by replacing fuel filter.

try replacing the fuel pump relay switch $15 bucks. then replace the fuel filter. then replace the fuel pump.

1983 ranger did not have a fuel pump relay its a carb engine.its a paper filter in one of the fuel lines that only worth a few bucks and its a mechanical fuel pump on engine block that worth 25-30 bucks.start with whats cheaper.than keep going like the first poster suggested.
