84 ford wont stay running???

Ran the ford for around ten minutes and it ran great. And  then while in 4th
gear coming home the truck  shut off. Once shut off the truck wouldn't crank
but when i wait for 15 minutes the truck will fire back up and run fine. What
could this be???

I had an issue with a Mercury Topaz that did something similar, ended up being a bad module that once hot would fail, once the engine compartment cooled down everything work as expected again.

But does my truck have a computer control system??? It is manual shift with carburetor and distributer. What do you mean by module??


Your truck wouldn't even crank? Your starter motor may be getting heat soaked by the exhaust. You don't mention any other conditions that may have occurred when it shut off, for instance was it running hot? What was the temperature gauge reading? Have you tried retrieving any trouble codes (would be the EEC-IV diagnostics)? This might with determining if a knock sensor was involved in shutdown.


Your truck does have an ECU, BTW.

Ok thinks for the info on Ecu. The truck was not overheating when shut down. I ran probly 20 minutes and it ran great. When almost home the truck while running studdered a little and died. I pulled over and tried to crank again it wouldn't crank. After pushing home and let it set for 20-30 minutes. The truck crunk back up and ran. You mention the starter heating up but would this make the truck shut off while running?? Thanks for the help.


The starter would not make it shut down, I just mentioned that as a cause for it not cranking after it's been running for a while. The shudder is a good clue, it misfired, so check all plugs and wires and coil, especially the coil if the boot shows wear or cracks it could arc. Rotor and cap as well. Finally check your fuel pressure you could have a failing pump or pressure regulator.

had this problem i know the solution its your tank fuel pump that feeds your railpump (ie the pump that is on the frame rail on drivers side) what happens is the rail pump will suck fuel but only enough to keep it running once the engine gets hot itll die because it cant get enough fuel sometimes it is the wiring that goes to the rear tank pump how i found out the issue is i disconected the fuel line at the rail pump then i hooked up a small line to the railpump and put the line in a jug of gas and it started up and ran for a good hour before it ran out of gas (had a 89 ford f250 gas and that was all the issue was)
