Why won't my car go reverse when it's in reverse

I can shift into reverse but it won't go reverse

A 1987 chances are that the reverse band has broke, and that is inside the tranny if it is an automatic, if it is a stick then it is highly that the reverse slider gear is toast, if I remember right reverse is taken off of second gear in the standard tranny.
