Lower RPMs

Asked by Sep 29, 2014 at 05:13 PM about the 1967 Chevrolet Malibu

Question type: Car Customization

The engine is a 327 with Edlebrock intake and carb with 3.73 rear end gears.  I am turning about 5800 RPMs at 60 MPH.  I know higher rear end gears will lower RPMs and have been told that getting a transmission  with an overdrive will also accomplish this.  What is your suggestion?

You must have a low geared transmission, my 4:10's only had my engine turning 3800 at 60mph with a 4 speed tranny. You have an excellent gear ratio for almost anything now, you could go to 3:50's and that will help but I would not go any higher with just a 327 CID, most likely you will wind up doing both to get the best of both worlds.

3:73 gear I found with my 700R4 overdrive tranny was not ideal for normal driving. I installed a 3:42 and everything has been fine. At 70mph I'm tacking 2000RPM.
