with a 12.5 volt reading at the battery there is a zero point zero reading at the bat post on the alternator do I check the wire or have the alternator tested

If you are talking about the big red wire on the alternator, then yes check the wire, it is possible that it has blown the main fuse link, that wire is battery voltage all the time. While your checking the wiring put a charger on the battery, you don't want to fry the alternator due to a too low battery.
