1990 toyota pickup speedometer trouble

Asked by Jan 08, 2014 at 05:57 PM about the 1990 Toyota Pickup

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

after 30 mph my speedometer needle jumps all over the place. i have a 22re with a manual trans. i do not know if i have a regular speedo cable or electronic sensor, and i do not know how to change out either of them. i am also wondering if an instrument cluster from an sr5, also a 22re stick shift will work in my truck since my truck does not have a tachometer.

It should have a cable. It sounds like it is in the instrument cluster or the gear inside the transmission the cable screws on to.

Another possibility depending on the mileage is that the cable is sticking in the casing and just needs to be lubed ?
