will a modern 8.5in ring gear fit in a 64 housing with a 8.375in ring gear

I'm not a mechanic, swamprat, but a 1/8" difference sounds like way too much to me. Every aftermarket supplier I've checked has a separate part number specifically for Corvettes, so I think you're going to want the right-size part.
