I have a 99 Toyota corolla--have been told by dealer need a new catlytic converter but don't have to have it. If I don't have to have it why do I have it??
Catalytic converters clean up exhaust emissions. They are not essential to making the car run but removal may cause problems. It is illegal to drive a car that came with a catalytic converter without one. Replacement cats are not that expensive when installed yourself and can increase power while still meeting emissions standards.
Depends on what State you are in. I agree with Larry, they are not going to make any difference in how the car runs, and Larry is also correct about it being illegal, but not all States. If a car was built with Calif emissions package, the cat conv. can be removed if it gets plugged and still be perfectly legal in, for example, Wyoming
