Alfa-Numerical Codes stored in the computer's memory need to be noted. Some Auto Parts stores will Scan the Computer for free. Your description suggests an Evap System leak. Most would suggest replacing the Gas Cap. I would suggest having a repair shop smoke test the system to pinpoint the leak. Diagnostic Time in my part of the world is usually 1 hour x what ever the labor rate may be. Get back to us with result.

Have it read for codes, even if the check engine light is NOT on the computer will have stored information and codes. Discount auto stores will read codes for no fee. write them down. Unless your in California where its illegal for them to do this. The EVAP system has more than one possibly fault code.

On my sons paper i think this may be a code its listed undervservice fault code: P0440 EVAP System

Have your Mechanic check out Toyota Service Bulletin EG013-03 for an explanation on how to fix you vehicle. Get back with results.
