what would cause the fuel pump to run after the key is off

Fuel pump circuit still energized, possibly a bad ignition switch, fuel pump relay stuck due to burnt internal points, tap the relay and see if the fuel pump stops, if it does replace the relay, fuel pump wiring short to power, inspect and repair the wiring. Those are some of the problems I have found. HTH
