Is it safe to drive with a failed a/c compressor unit ?

Asked by Oct 03, 2015 at 10:30 AM about the 2007 Honda CR-V

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I hear grinding noise from off side front of engine when starting up and
while driving at slow speed. The noise fades away at higher speeds. For
the past month or so, I had even noticed that the a/c wasn't blowing any
cold air at all. I feel the problem is the with the a/c compressor unit. If that is
the case, am I safe to drive the car to the garage which is 15 miles away
from where it is stationed now ? I hope my problem is clearer now, and
someone would be able to advise !

You can take your chances that it doesn't lock up and shred the serpentine belt. We can't guarantee anything.

If it is the compressor, it will seize eventually sending little bits of air conditioning system flying all down the freeway behind you- people in the past could just take the v-belt off the compressor, but with a serpentine belt, the engineers have deleted this quick fix- the marvels of the modern world-
