Is $800 too much to replace shifter assembly in a Ford escape 2006?

Asked by Jan 27, 2015 at 09:19 PM about the 2006 Ford Escape

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Sometimes I can shift into gear with no problem. Other times (and it's getting more often), I have to push and push (and keep pushing) the gear shifter button to engage. I have zero skills for DIY in this department but I'm willing to try doing the job myself because I don't have the $800 the repairman (at the dealer) said the job would cost.  I saw suggestions from TransAm77/rcemearmy on another post; so I'm throwing this out to the broader community.  Any guidance will be appreciated.

Look for a repair shop other than a dealership. Might save you some money.
