Using higher viscosity oil

Asked by Oct 27, 2017 at 12:17 PM about the 2007 Ford Escape

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2007 Escape Hybrid w 147K miles has been burning through oil a good
bit faster these days.  I am the original owner and love the car, so I don't mind
keeping an eye on the oil levels, but several people have recommended
using a thicker oil to manage the problem.

I have used a 5w20 (recommended) syth blend since the beginning.

Does it make any sense to go thicker?

Try 5W-30 oil. If that does not help try 10W-40. How many miles does it take to lose a quart of oil?

Maybe a quart every 500-700 miles? The question mark is because it's my second car so usage is random. I typically just check it every 3 weeks or so and add what it needs. But I think 500-700 miles is right. I know one time I had put 2.5 K on it or so and it was WAY low.

Thanks F_O_R and Tom. That is what I'll do!

Try some high mileage oil at the 5w30 grade. It may or may not help, but shouldn't cause any issues.

Ok are valve seals might be on their way out or your PCV valve might be clogged or you can check and see if any blue smoke is coming out of the engine, from the tailpipe have someone rev the engine if any smoke comes out that would be an indication that your valve seals may be on his way out and that's why you may be burning up oil fast.
