Asked by Angel Jan 26, 2016 at 09:51 AM about the 1992 Toyota MR2

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My husband has a Toyota mr2, the timing
chain broke and the mechanic is saying the
oil pump broke and that caused it.  We are
trying to see if anyone else has had this
problem and would the engine still be good.

Is the guy a certified mechanic? If so I would go by what he says.

If the oil pump quit the lack of oil pressure would do all kinds of damage to the engine.

Mr2's don't have timing chains they run belts MKI 1985-1989 (4age) engine and MKII 1991 -1995 (5sfe) (3stge turbo) engine. The these engines all use a rotor impeller type oil pump very reliable. After disassembly its simple to determine if the pump caused an issue with the timing belt.
