This is a reply to the answer to my 1st question.
My 99 Audi A4 used to start up with rpms at around 1200, then after it warmed up the rpm would drop to about 800. That's why I thought it had a choke. I don't know if it matters that its a 2.8 ?
Sounds like your idle air control valve is not operating properly. Might need cleaning or replaced.
This is regular operation for an audi. The reason the car runs high on start up is because it its using up the gas vapors trapped in the charcoal can from your fuel tank for start up. If your car is not doing this every cold start that is the only time you have to worry as it normally means your emissions system has a leak.
