95 Impreza 1.8 starts hard or not at all when warm

Asked by Sep 09, 2015 at 12:40 PM about the 1995 Subaru Impreza

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My '95 Impreza with a 1.8L sometimes won't fire when the engine is just below operating temp. It helps sometimes if I pop the air filter cover off and it ALWAYS pop starts quite easily. When it's cold or if it comes up tp temp and I shut it off for just a short time it starts like a dream. Lately it also has failed to fire a couple times when the outside temps are really hot (90+F). It runs good once started and still gets 27 mpg. So far I've replaced the coolant temp sensor (it went bad), the MAF sensor, the PCV valve, the fuel injection pressure regulator, plugs and wires. Where should I look next? I NEED this car to keep going.

You said it helps sometimes when you remove the air filter. You did replace the air filter right ?

Yes. Sorry, should have included that with the original post.

Sounds like the vehicle is vapor locking have vehicle put on a lift and check to see if the heat shield between the exhaust system and the gas tank is still in place they are known to rust off or come off and expose the heat from the exhaust to the gas tank causing vapor lock.

i have the same problem with my 96 impreza 1.8. when it does not start i hear a clicking sound underneath the dash. doe jou have that aswell? it runs and starts fine when the motor is warm after 6 miles ore so and it starts great cold. but after like 2 miles it does not sart for about 15 to 20 min after that it starts fine.
