Subaru legacy 98 gtb transmission or clutch problem?

Asked by Aug 11, 2014 at 07:29 AM about the 1998 Subaru Legacy

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So a disaster occured today as I was driving 80k shifting from 5th gear accidentally into
second gear!! I now can not use any gear or reverse. If I put my car into any gear as I
release the clutch a grinding/squeaking noise happens.

Clutch or transmission, advice please??

Both. How's the engine? I hope you don't blow it up.

Engine runs fine. The clutch won't engage so car can't move at all

At best you blow the clutch. At worst both the transmission and the clutch. Any way you look at it. It's not pretty.

I did the something like that on a Toyota Celica once, after I pulled out the trans I found pieces of clutch all over the bell housing, turned when I missed the right gear the clutch disc speed was too high and exploded the clutch, turns out it happens more than you know, if your car has an access cover on the bell housing take it off and see if there are bits of clutch material in there, that will tell you. If it is the clutch talk with a good parts person and get a good clutch kit, might be a little speedy now but it will last a lot longer in the long run. HTH

There are no access panels on subaru transmissions unfortunately. You will have to remove the transmission from the car to find out for sure whats going on.
