why will the gear shiftier not work in my mom car we took a 6 hr road trip came home would not would not go into reverse or park got it to go into reverse but we tryed parking it did not work

Remove the top of the center console and inspect the shifter assembly. Open the storage compartment on the console and lift out the compartment. Remove the screws and open the cupholder. Gently pull the top of the console up and unplug the electrical connections for the power outlet and seat heater switches, if equipped. Now remove the top of the console and inspect the shifter assembly. I'm thinking that since the catalytic converter sits right under the console you may have a missing heat shield for the converter. If this is the case the shifter assembly, which has plastic parts, may have been damaged by excessive heat from the catalytic converter. HTH. -Jim

The shifter in my car is loose and occasionally does that. Before you take things apart try simply pushing down on it, then shifting. When I do that with mine it re-engages and shifts fine. Probably something broken in there, but I've never gone in to see what it is.
