why will the gear shiftier not work in my mom car we took a 6 hr road trip came home would not would not go into reverse or park got it to go into reverse but we tryed parking it did not work

The shifter in my car is loose and occasionally does that. Before you take things apart try simply pushing down on it, then shifting. When I do that with mine it re-engages and shifts fine. Probably something broken in there, but I've never gone in to see what it is.
