Flywheel replacement

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My flywheel went bad and I want to replace it, but do I need to replace
my entire transmission to do that?

No, but it still has to come out to get to it. But this car should have a flexplate not a flywheel, it is and automatic right?

Yes it is.

Then it is a flexplate, labor intensive but much cheaper than a flywheel.

And it would be a good idea to replace the engines rear main seal and the trannys the front pump seal while the trans is out. You don't want to go back in there due to an oil leak.

Would the flexplate cause that? I started leaking oil from the seal and was told to replace the motor. I haven't drove it since but I didn't think it could be fixed.

No a rear main is a seal that just goes bad cause it can, same with the front pump seal in the tranny, it just makes sense to replace them while you in there. What makes you think you have a bad flex plate?

I took it to an auto shop and got diagnosed but clearly I need a new mechanic cause he said "flywheel" not flexplate.

Unfortunately terminology get lost on some of the new mechanics, and yes I would choose a shop that is certified, at least that way you will get the best bang for your hard earned dollar, and make sure they do those seals, some shops will only do the bare minimum to keep costs down. So tell them to do those seals while things are apart. So maybe they will think that this Damsel knows what she wants and won't try anything sneaky, I am sorry to say but when they see a female they think they can tell her anything and she will spring for it. Hope this helps.

Flywheel and flexplate are often flywheels even though they are different.
