2002 Pontiac Sunfire won't start unless I press gas peddle while turning key?

Asked by Jul 11, 2015 at 09:15 PM about the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2002 Pontiac Sunfire has problems
starting, I have to hold the gas
peddle down while turning the key
for it to start. We have spent $800
and had the fuel pump replaced, oil
changed, and had a used fuel pump
relay put on. And it's still having
trouble! What's wrong with this car?
It idles and runs fine. Though my
temperature gauge on the dash
doesn't work half the time- (we've
had the wire for it replaced before
because it got hung and cut by the
fan/ fan belt). Mechanic doesn't
know what's wrong, even paid a man
who worked on Pontiacs to check it
on a computer system?

Did you have the air filter changed and throttle body cleaned ? Also add fuel injector cleaner to gas tank.

Sounds like the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve is dirty and sticking or bad. HTH. -Jim
