which valve is the one to add freon, the small one by the fire wall or the larger one closer tot eh front?

My 1998 olds aurora has tow valves on the line, a small one by the firewall and a larger one towards the front. Which one is the low side?

the one by the firewall should be the low side. You wont be able to connect to the wrong fitting.
