why does my transmission slip

Shifting from first to second gear, the transmission does not shift until high rpm (around
5000). Shifts sluggishly from second to third gear. Overdrive is almost nonexistent
during freeway driving and requires use of d2 range if I am forced to slow down for any
reason. Overdrive feels spongy
