What does it mean when a service engine light comes on in a 1998 Nissan pathfinder

The computer has detected a problem. Most likely with one of the engine's sensors. Visit your local auto parts store and have them scan the computer. Most stores will do it for free. Then post the trouble code(s) here and we can help further. HTH. -Jim
