I have removed an xterra 4wd transmission before. To do a rear main seal you have to remove the trans to do it. 2,400 is a fair price. Its alot of work. A transmission shop may give you a better rate since 90% of the work is dropping and reinstalling the trans.

I was quoted $1200 by the dealership in Nov. 2012 and I was first made aware of the leak in 2010. Still have not repaired it, its not leaking that bad. Its a pricey repair considering the KBB value today is slightly more than the cost of that single repair. The part itself is maybe $20. But as Andrew said, you essentially have to take the car apart.

My 2002 xterra is giving me the same problems. My mechanic will do the job for $350.00, including the Parts. And yes. Transmission hsve to be removed.
