Why wont a 2002 Nissan Maxima start ?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My brothers 2002 Maxima was making a "whirring" sound for a couple hours after he shut the car off.  He went out to start the car the next morning and it wouldnt start.  You can hear it trying trying to start, but its just not grabbing.  Battery is fine, everything works.

whirring? you mean the starter kept turning? check the flywheel/flexplate for damage. maybe the ring gear is missing. or you could mean the fans stayed on, in which case you probably had an overheating condition.

I had a 91 integra that always killed the battery because the radiator fan would run in the middle of the night for no apparent reason. I put a switch on the fans fuse (to over ride the fuse in the fusebox) and it solved the problem but i had to remember to use the switch everytime. I think there is a temp sensor switch at the fan but i sold the car soon after and never pursued the correct fix. See if your fan has an autonomous switch. If so, try replacing it.
