Fuel pump not getting power

So about a month ago my eclipse 2000 v6 3.0L
broke down on me on the freeway. I lost steering
power and brake power as I was driving. Didn't
know what it was until a guy decided to help me,
he said its the fuel pump that could've stopped
working.  He leaves and I try out an old school
trick. I go underneath my car, and hit the fuel filler
after 5 hits while trying to run the car the car turns
on and runs for about 3 weeks. After the 3 weeks it
starts doing it again. I do the same thing as I did
when it broke down on me. Days go by and one day
i didn't drive it, the day after I wanted to drive it but
it wouldn't start at all. So I buy a new fuel pump
and install it and it still wouldn't turn on. Don't know
what else it could be please help!!
