2001 Mitsubishi Galant, 3 alternators down, this can't be the issue, electrical?

Asked by May 31, 2017 at 06:15 PM about the 2001 Mitsubishi Galant

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The battery kept dying so I had it replaced. Three days later the new battery
had to be jumped. While driving a friend home that night, the power seemed
off as if it just wasn't at full power. There was a loud pop and a bright flash
from the front of the car, the power dipped low, the headlights went very dim,
and we coasted another 50ft or so and it died. It smelled like rotten eggs for
about a week prior and there was a squeaking when starting up in the
mornings. The mechanic replaced the alternator and it seemed to have done
the trick. However, two days later while letting the a/c run after starting it, I
could smell what seemed like a plastic or rubber burning smell and saw a
small amount of smoke coming from under the hood. I quick turned it off and
checked to see where the smoke was coming from. It appeared to be coming
from the alternator. So, the mechanic picked it up and replaced the alternator
again, thinking maybe it was a bad one. The next day after getting it back,
while driving home from work, I noticed the radio volume starting to go in and
out. Radio still lighting up and visually fine just audio acting odd. Later that
evening, the power started to drain again, there was a big jerk, and lights
started to dim again. I tried pumping the gas pedal to promote some sort of
response and it would try to accelerate, but couldn't keep a steady
momentum before finally stalling out and wouldn't start back up. After waiting
about an hour it started back up to go another mile down the road and die
again. Mechanic put in another alternator and had to replace a relay/fuse (120
is all I recall of the htz or volts?) claiming it had blown the relay/fuse. Picked
up the car again today and the radio is already cutting in and out. Does
ANYONE have any idea of what I'm dealing with here or how to remedy it?
Not sure my mechanic knows what is really going on. Kind of at my wits end.
Please help!
