My montero sport goes off continously when I am in heavy traffic, but doesnt do that if the road is free all the way. I have changed my air flow meter but it is still same problem

Look for a vacuum leak, clean the throttle body, check the idle air control. How are your ignition components? Plugs? Any lights on the dash?

in addition what Tom said, take and get it scanned and cleared if you have a check engine light, but might as well check for all that stuff tom mentioned first,,
