Starts but crank slowing down?

Asked by May 29, 2016 at 01:29 PM about the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So my 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder (about
124,000 miles on it) is starting fine but over the past
few weeks, every time I go to start it, the crank and
turnover seem to slow down a little more every
time. Is there something I should be wary of or
something I need to get changed out before my car
dies on me? I just bought a new battery about a
year ago.

As the vehicle gets older high current load burns the contact ring and contact lugs inside the starter solenoid, eventually it get to the point where the resistance gets high and requires more amperage to do the same task. First make sure your battery and cables are in good condition and everything is clean and tight, even down by the starter, if that all checks good then I would just replace the starter assembly, at 124000 the motor brushes are most likely worn down also. To really nail this down you could have the starting system fully checked, some parts stores have the units that can do this, others do not.
