Towing a uhaul from ATL to IND

Question type: General

So I had a hitch installed on my 2018 Subaru Impreza, and
we're trying to move states on a limited budget.

We don't have too much to move, but some of the things
are very bulky, so I'd like to get the biggest covered U Haul
trailer that we can and will give us a little leeway with
regard to weight. I don't want to destroy the car on the trip.

It's a manual transmission, for what it's worth.

According to Subaru you can tow about 1,000 pounds unbraked and about 2,000 with trailer brakes. This includes the trailer, your cargo and the passengers. UHaul would probably refuse to rent you anything but the smallest trailer they have.

An empty 6 x 12 UHaul trailer would exceed your towing capacity. Even their smallest trailer is pushing it. Use a better vehicle.

Incidentally, I do not have the option of using a better vehicle. I have a 16 month old child and cannot put her car seat in the cab of a rental. I will contact U Haul and see what they have to say about the matter. An enclosed trailer may not be needed. Thank you so much for the advice.

While I understand that, our haul-weight (minus the trailer itself) should be under 500lb. We're just trying to take a mattress and a few minor things with us. We cannot take a truck with a vehicle on it because of our child. Is there an alternative th as t you would reccomend?

This gets tricky in that the baby Subarus' 2.0i is really wimpy pulling its own mass, never mind adding the equivalent of say, 5 extra passengers (800lbs). The risks are both to overheating either the CVT or the motor. Watch temps carefully, especially on any hills. Given that the empty sled is only 500lbs, and you can maintain a minimal tongue-weight by cargo distribution, you should be ok. Relax, be safe...and stay cool! Ern
