I have a 2005 Mazda MPV with 125K miles. Dealership says I need new catalytic converter. Is this common?
Check engine light is on and not blinking. Runs fine. Dealership says I need new converter and sensors to pass inspection.
Since the check engine light is on, you have a code or codes that are triggered. So without you posting the codes, we have no idea on what would be causing your issue. Any local auto parts store will do this for you for free and you can post the four digit codes back here. What sensors is the dealership replacing? I suspect a misfire/ignition code, was found, and that would mean you were driving around with a misfire, (you would know buy a hesitation or skip) dumping raw fuel into the cats and in turn damaging them. But without knowing more details, I have to go with what the dealership is recommending. Why don't you take it to another independent mechanic and have them give you an estimate and what they think is the issue is? Might save you some money in the long run.
