why does the abs light stay on

The ABS light will stay illuminated because the computer has detected a fault within the system, it could be that you have a wheel speed sensor at fault or a damaged or broken pick up ring. Your best bet is to have the fault codes read by a reputable garage who will diagnose the fault and quote you for the repair costs.

Until the problem is repaired and the light goes out your antilock brakes are disabled. This will not effect your regular braking. You just won't have the antilock feature. HTH. -Jim
