2016 Subaru Forester ABS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2016 Forester ABS, Hill start and Vehicle stability lights come on when I
back up. I have had it "repaired" twice, but the problem recurs. Do I just keep
taking it back or find a different mechanic?

If the ABS light comes on at start up, goes off, then comes back on when the vehicle starts moving the problem is the ABS pump and modulator assembly. Each time you start the engine the ABS computer runs a check on the complete system except for the pump and modulator assembly. If you have a problem with a sensor the ABS light will come on at start up and stay on. When the vehicle starts moving the ABS computer tests the pump motor by running the pump for a few seconds. If the pump fails the test the ABS light will come back on when the vehicle starts moving. That's why the light will go out then come back on when the vehicle starts moving if the pump is bad. Another thing to remember is the ABS computer will not store trouble codes. You need to scan the ABS computer when the ABS light is on. Otherwise you won't get any trouble codes. You also need a scan tool that can communicate with the ABS computer. It's a completely different computer than the engine computer. Hope that helps! Jim
