Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Anyone else experiencing the mold smell from vents. Worse on humid days. Bought a brand new 2015 and it started smelling of mold around 5,000 miles. They have done all the useless stuff like changing the cabin filters and cleaning the evaporator hose etc. Now they are saying that Toyota says customers should pay over $100,00 every 10,000 miles to change the cabin filter and do the cleaning kit in evap hose. They are also saying they know this is not a total fix but it might help control the odor. MOLD IS DANGEROUS. I have never had headaches, sinus issues and skin breakouts like I have since buying this Prius. I LOVE the car but can't handle this smell. I've also been told to  turn the air conditioner off and the recirculate air off before turning the car off. This does appear to help to only a certain degree (when I remember to do it) but other times it doesn't seem to make a difference. Shame on Toyota for not fixing this issue.

Do run the car with the fan on and the AC off to dry out the cooling coil which will reduce the problem, use the outside air setting, not recirculate though as you want fresh air. You may want to talk to Toyota directly and complain Maybe they will do something for you. I do suspect you live in a humid area which is not their fault. You could also use a moisture absorber in your car to keep the inside dry when you are not driving the car.

Could try spraying something in the outside vents by the wipers to kill the mold smell or at least mask it. Run your ac on outside air coming in .That's what the Car Talk guys say.
