My Cherokee makes a bad clunking noise since I installed the front drive shaft.

Asked by Jan 28, 2014 at 05:19 PM about the 1994 Jeep Cherokee

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought this jeep yesterday, the front drive shaft was taken out. Today I installed it, then
took it for a test drive. It did fine until I got up over 40, then it started violently shaking and
felt like the drive shaft was going to fly off. When i stopped, and messed with the 4x4
shifter, it wouldn't do it until I got up some speed then it would start again. The steering
seemed to affected as well. It didn't do it until I hooked up that front drive shaft.

Sounds like the drive shaft isn't balanced properly and or the U-joints are bad. Have a machine shop check it out for you.
