Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4x4 4.0 L engine.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just noticed yesterday, when I was driving the car, running an errand, I started to get a funny smell, like brakes burning, or like the emergency brakes were stuck.  The engine runs fine, but the Jeep was being restrained it seemed...the jeeps speedometer read 55 mph but I was actually going around 40-45 mph,,,guestimate.  No trouble I am confuse as to what was happening...the transmission seemed to shift just fine.

Breaks are hanging up somewhere, jack up each wheel and try spinning them, should rotate somewhat freely, finding the one is locked up means looking for several causes of why.

Check and see if only one wheel is hot and dragging or all four. If all four then it will probably be the brake booster or master cylinder. If both rear wheels, probably the emergency brake cable is frozen either with water or rust. I have a 95 Grand Cherokee and the foam intake filter for the booster (under the dash behind the brake pedal) got gummy and crumbly. Some of the foam got into the booster and prevented the poppet valve from seating resulting in the brakes slowly locking up. I got home by pinching off the vacuum line to the booster. So no power brakes, VERY hard pedal, went slow, but got home.
