my 2001 grand cherokee has heat blowing out of the center vent and ac blowing out of the side vents when its on ac.WTF
Sounds like one of the mode control servo motors or control door is damaged, most of the work on the climate system requires that the dash be removed to gain access to the unit, so if you feel that you can do the job there is a video on you tube about dash removal. And it is easier to do with the front seats removed also. been there done that.
The mechanism which operates the blend doors in your ac system has failed. This is a common problem. The plastic used was inferior and causes the blrnd doors to cease moving properly. Dont worry though. Your dash does not need to be removed. There is a fixing kit available from www.jgcparts.com. Their website also shows step by step instructions. It should take about 2 hours wiyh average ability. Or you can ask a mechanic to follow the instruction. Good luck.
The kit sold on the site listed is only for the blend door repair not a mode door or motor. I've done the blend door repair myself and it is fairly easy as long as you have a hot knife setup for you pencil soldering iron, but if you have to go deeper into your HVAC system the dash has gotta come out.
